Studio Cream on Chrome is looking for an intern to join the team for 4-5 months in Rotterdam, starting from February 2023. Considering the assignments ahead, we are ideally looking for someone with a digital / visual design profile. The internship is paid.
About us:
Cream on Chrome is a design studio founded by Jonas Althaus and Martina Huynh. We develop hybrid interfaces that break down topics of economy, technology and society and facilitate discourse. We understand “interface” as a mediation point between a subject and the public – which can take shape as interactive experiences, social interventions and multimedia spaces.
The studio has worked closely with institutions like Het Nieuwe Instituut, MU Hybrid Art House, Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid, Dutch Design Foundation, the Royal Academy of Art The Hague, and regularly presents their work internationally. Cream on Chrome is a laureate of the Dutch Design Awards and DDA & EY Award 2022. In 2019 the studio was awarded a Talent Development Grant by the creative industries fund NL and won the STRP Award for Creative Technology (ACT) in 2021.
Work environment:
We offer you a workplace in our studio, where you join us for 3 days a week. The office is equipped with electronic prototyping tools and has access to a metal and wood workshop in the basement. The building is shared with other creatives whom we enjoy eating lunch with.
Apart from occasional meetings with clients or freelancers, you will mostly be spending time with the two of us. Working so closely means that you will not only receive regular feedback and guidance, but also get insights in all phases of a project (concept brainstorms, research, acquisition, production, client meetings and presentation) – basically how a studio like ours is run.
As with our previous interns we care about the learning goals you bring and are mindful to take these into consideration when choosing the tasks for you. During your time with us, we are always open to discuss and evaluate how your internship is going and to hear your suggestions. The tasks you are involved in vary across visual experiments, material or design research, concept sketches for interaction, supporting (physical) production and designing one element of an installation. The exact hours and work schedule can be discussed together during the interview.
Your profile:
- You are an art or design student or at the beginning of your career looking for practical work experience
- Open-minded and curious with a drive to learn
- Not afraid to try things out and experiment
- Sociable with an open communication style
- Attention to detail
- An interest in what’s happening in emergent technologies
- Skills in graphic design, visual production, video editing, basic animation
- Experience with a 3D modeling / animation program (e.g. Cinema 4D, Blender, Unity, etc.)
- Familiarity with the common Adobe Creative Suite software
- Being open to support hands-on production
- Bonus skills: web interaction, coding visuals or microcontrollers
